Margaret S. McMillan, 96, artist, world traveler, linguist, wife, and mother passed away peacefully on 6 Aug 2019. Margaret was born in New Jersey, oldest daughter of the seven children of James and Eleanor Sullivan. She was raised in Panama. She attended Radcliffe College, majoring in Romance languages, then she joined the State Department and travelled the world. While in Rio de Janeiro she studied the Russian language Next she was assigned to Moscow where there was close knit group at the embass and she met a handsome Marine officer, Col. John H. McMillan, whom she later married. Back in the States, Margaret and Mac settled into the military lifestyle and had a daughter, Katherine McMillan. A few years later Mac was assigned to the 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean and Margaret and Kathy lived in Ville Franche sur Mer in the South of France for a few years. While there Margaret was inspired to explore her love of art and painting. After a few more duty stations the family ended up in Hawai'i. Mac retired from the Marine Corps and Margaret studied more art. She met some other artists through classes, they started painting together on location, and formed a group called the Roving Rembrandts holding exclusive exhibits. Expanding her talent she started teaching landscape painting. With some of her artist friends and others she did more traveling. She also remained close with her siblings throughout her life, making lots of trips to see them and attend all important family events. She is survived by her daughter, two sisters, a brother, many nieces, nephews, and cousins. A private gathering will be held to celebrate her amazing life.
