Bernadette Sam Mui Young's Obituary
Bernadette Sam Mui Young, 89, died on June 15, 2023 surrounded by family. She was predeceased in 2018 by her husband, Clarence. Bernie was born on Nov. 23, 1933 in Buck Toy Village, Leong Doo district, Zhongshan, Guangdong (Canton) Province to Young Wah Chai and Kwock Shee Young (aka Kwock Yee Mui of Chuk Sau Yuen Village). She is survived by her younger twin siblings, Allen Young & Priscilla Ho, and her daughters and sons: Clarisse "Pixie" (Charles Shumaker), Patrice (James Mahoney), and Julie (Eric Kowalski), Jeffrey, and Jon (Lyzza). Bernie also leaves 11 grandchildren: Jordan Young, Dr. Charles Michael Shumaker, Lauren Kowalski, PA, Dr. Ian Mahoney, Katharine Shumaker, Kimberly Kowalski, Rachel Mahoney, Amanda Kowalski, and Alayna, Jonfranco, and Francine Young. She is also survived by 4 great grandchildren. She entered Honolulu with her parents and one older brother, Hon Chau, on the S.S. Pres. Pierce on Nov. 18, 1939. Her father owned a Chinese merchandise import store in Chinatown, Honolulu. She grew up on 11th Ave. in Kaimuki. Bernie graduated from St. Francis H.S. and entered secretarial school. She cared for her father who had ALS. During her husband's 28-year career in the Air Force, she traveled with her husband overseas to Japan twice and Okinawa. Bernie worked at Wing Coffee Co. while raising their 5 children. In retirement she helped raise her grandson, Jordan. She previously was board member and Chair to the Kalihi-Palama Neighborhood Board from 2001-2013.
Funeral service will be on Saturday July 22nd, 2023, at Valley of the Temples, Trousdale Chapel. Visitation will be at 8:30am with service to begin at 9:00am. There will be a burial to follow at 11am at Valley of the Temples Memorial Park.
