I'm sad to just now learn of his passing. I was in the Blue-Water Marine Lab in the Summer before my 9th grade year back in the 80s, and valued his instruction. That program that he headed lead to my studying Marine Bio in college, and then teaching it in high schools in Morocco and China. He has had a legacy and an impact around the world.
It’s been 5 years since Sherwood’s passing and every now and then I think about him. He was the best mentor and boss a person could have. Always supportive and positive, it was sad to see how the illness overpowered him. He will always be loved. Wished we had more time with him
Mr. Maynard was a quite unassuming gentleman. Liz my heart goes out to you as I learn of Mr. Maynard's passing. I know you may have had some difficult days. Prayerfully as you see many sunrises without him, your tears have turned to smiles when your mind takes you back to those special moments you two shared. I smile when I think of the many times I called him in the early morning or late night hours, while being challenged with the time differences. He was always so kind and calm and we would laugh and I'd say o I’m sorry call you back in 3 hours or some cases tomorrow. Then on his trip to Houston he blessed me with the alarm clock with dual time zones (every time I travel with it I always tell the story of how I got it). I was thrilled you guys thought enough of me and our friendship to remembering me every year at Christmas and whenever you were in Houston. I always looked forward to your visits to Houston and enjoyed our visits time together. I felt so honored that you thought allowed me time to visit with you during your short stays here. It saddens me that I will never see him in Hawaii I always promised him I would come. Please know that my heart and prayers are with you and I will pray for the comforting peace of the Holy Spirit to be with you always. Blessing to you. Pauline Samuels

He was a rock in a time of growth and change in my life. Every college student has a good helping of drama and difficulty growing into responsibility and I always loved his calm, focused demeanor. I could bring him any problem. He was real and truthful, always. He would guild me and help me focus. I felt like he was a friend that always had my back. Always a leader, hard worker, and approachable friend! He was very forgiving and I never wanted to disappoint him. He was a great example of leading from hard work and the trenches. I know it didn't matter how much time had gone by, he was always going to be a friend.
Please accept my most sincere condolences. Liz you have lost a partner and your love and your friend. I am very sorry for your loss. Please take this cyber hug. I feel like Sherwood's leaving this world is too soon, but it is not for me to say, but I am very, very sad. I really love him and you and pray for you and the whole family to be comforted and to get through these the difficult days ahead.

Thank you Sherwood! For being an unwavering champion of undergraduate marine education; for showing me and countless others our true North; for living your principles – it was never about your own personal gain but about giving students the best possible opportunities; for being a scrappy fighter who steered MOP through troubled waters; and for being a supportive boss, colleague, and friend. I miss you already, but find comfort in knowing your battles are complete, your suffering is behind you, and you are now resting in calm clear waters on the other side. Farewell my friend and rest peacefully knowing that your torch is passed forward through all you've touched.
Sherwood, thank you for always thinking about and remembering me. Knowing that you were always in support of my decisions, and guiding me through the many possibilities that presented themselves throughout my college years and beyond, made more of an impact on me that you know. I feel very, very lucky to have gotten to know you so well and I think about you often. Your guidance and friendship, and mentorship and caring for students and education, inspired me and many others. I have missed you and will keep on missing you, but I am so glad to have been part of your legacy.
If not for Sherwood's leadership of the Marine Options Program I would never have seen the announcement on a bulletin board looking for volunteers on Tern Island at French Frigate Shoals in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands back in the winter of 1988 when I was starting my Ph.D. studies in the UH Zoology Department. That experience has shaped the trajectory of my professional career ever since. I think of the movie "It's a Wonderful Life"....each of us touches so many other lives that would evolve very differently without us. Thank you, Sherwood, for the influence you have had on my life.

Dear Liz,
Sherwood loved the Marine Options program and I came to UH when it was moving to the College of Natural Sciences. I have met so many people since then who tell me how much that program changed their lives and gave them a wonderful career opportunity. I don't think the University of Hawaii understands how much graduates of this program serves as ambassadors for the University. He was a wonderful man and is sorely missed by this community.
