Byodo-In Temple
Symbolizing Hawaii’s rich heritage and historical connection with Japan, the Byodo-In Temple was built in 1968 to mark the 100th anniversary of the first Japanese immigrants to Hawaii. A replica of Phoenix Hall in the 11th-century Buddhist Temple complex in Uji, Japan, it is a cultural landmark that attracts thousands of people each year. Byodo-In Temple is a place of great reverence that welcomes people of all faiths to worship, meditate or simply appreciate its beauty. Inside the main entrance is a magnificent nine-foot Amida Buddha statue created by Japanese sculptor Masuzo Inui. A quiet niche room behind the statue features glass-front niches, many of which can hold up to six full-size urns and can be personalized with photos and other mementos.
