Vayne Keikilani Pregill
January 16, 1929 - February 14, 2022
Vayne Keikilani (Markham) Pregill Born on January 16th 1929, Vayne (Honey) Markham was the second of three daughters born to Harriett Hubbard (Blackburn) and Norman St. David (Juju) Markham. Honey and her sisters, Lavern (Pregill) and Beryl (Sissy) (Schaller) were originally raised in a small camp located on the North side of what is now Pearl City. Her grandfather, Lewis Hubbard, was the engineer on a pump that fed water to Waipahu Plantation. It was known as pump six. In the fifties she and her family would visit the people still living at the pump and in Waipahu town. We would always go see Obon and Yamauchi at their store on the Ewa end of town and at first, I couldn’t understand why they would cry when they saw us. “They used to take care of us, they love us and they’re so happy to see us,” was my mother’s explanation. Honey… always happy, upbeat, full of gratitude, feeling that she was fine and knowing that everything really is ok, no matter the circumstances. She expressed her love through cooking, baking, socializing and laughter. There were many weekends when the kids in Holo Place would fill the kitchen helping to bake cookies and coconut cake or mango seed. Later, there was a hand cranked shaved ice machine that was worth its weight in gold. In the fifties she worked at the Piggly Wiggly in Halawa, close to where the Sack and Save is now. For many years she was in sales at Liberty House on Fort Street. She didn’t drive in those days, catching the bus to work. On her day off we would often catch the bus to see a movie. In the sixties Honey married Arthur Pregill for a long enduring love and life together. They traveled; Europe, Portugal, Tahiti, and they loved it! But once seemed to be enough for them. They were content in Aiea with family, friends, cooking, gardening, orchids, birds and entertaining. There was always a dog or two to love. We don’t know if she had a favorite, but she kept a big picture of Uku on the wall by her, the dog that body surfed with the kids at Sandy Beach. She cherished the life she and Arthur made together, her family and her friends and kept in touch with them until she couldn’t…..she loved her home in Aiea where she chose to be until her beautiful passing on Valentines Day, looking out over Pearl Harbor and the Ewa plain where she grew into her life. Her Grand daughter Alana took wonderful care of her Tutu in the waning years of her life and showed us the depth and the river of love and compassion. Honey is survived by her son, Bill Beach in Honokaa. Grandchildren, Erik and Alana Beach-Jones, nephews Mark (Will) Pregill of Aiea and John Schaller in Las Vegas and many cousins in the next two generations. A viewing at … chapel at Valley of the Temples followed by the internment The family asks that in lieu of flowers a contribution be made to any organization that helps animals. The Oahu SPCA has been a recent favorite of hers. If that’s not possible, then an act of kindness in memory of Honey would be awesome!
