Alfred Purganan Jandoc's Obituary
Alfred Purganan Jandoc passed away on Jan. 21, 2025, in Kalihi. He was
born on Sept. 18, 1933, in Santa Cruz, Ilocos Sur, Philippines. He
graduated from Pimentel Memorial Academy and married his longtime
sweetheart, Elvira Romano, in 1963.
Alfred attended the Philippine Institute of Fisheries Technology,
earning a degree in fish culture. He later took education courses at
Laguna Institute. His training led to jobs in teaching and fishery
studies with the Philippine government.
After several years, Alfred left his position as a fishery biologist
in the Philippine Fisheries Commission and immigrated to Hawaii to
join his parents and siblings. His wife and two children arrived in
the isles a year later and they settled in Kalihi, close to Alfred’s
siblings. He worked at Fisher Printing, the Ilikai, and the Hale Koa
Hotel, retiring in the early 2000s after more than 30 years.
Gardening was Alfred’s hobby and he surrounded their home with
orchids, hibiscus, and gardenia. He also enjoyed traveling, visiting
old favorites such as Las Vegas but also far-flung destinations
including Russia and Morocco.
But what Alfred loved to do most was talk story, enthusiastically
sharing anecdotes about relatives and tales of life in the
Philippines. He was a copious note-taker and became the family
historian. One of his great undertakings later in life was the
creation of a family tree, documenting seven generations of the
extended Jandoc clan.
Alfred is survived by son Rey (Florence) Jandoc; daughter Julie
(Bernard) Cozo; grandchildren Johnathan Cozo, Bryson Cozo, Jasmin
Cozo, Brenden Cozo, Justin Jandoc, and Jilian Jandoc; and
great-grandchildren Leighton-Robert Cozo and Roleigh Cozo.
Services will be held March 1 at Our Lady of the Mount Catholic Church
in Kalihi. Viewing begins at 10 AM with Mass at 11:30 AM Lunch follows
at 12:45 PM in the church hall, with burial at 3 PM at Valley of the
Temples.
