Alfred Leonardo Oga's Obituary
Alfred “Barney” Leonardo Oga
October 2, 1938 – February 16, 2026
Alfred Leonardo Oga, lovingly known to all as Barney, was born on October 2, 1938, in Waialua, Hawai‘i. He was a proud graduate of Waialua High School, Class of 1956, where he excelled in football, track, and basketball.
After high school, Barney served one year in the Air National Guard before continuing his commitment to his country with five years in the United States Air Force. Following his military service, he began a long and dedicated career as a cable communications technician with TeleGlobe Canada, later acquired by AT&T. Each day, he made the long drive from Waialua to the communications station above Yokohama Bay—work he took great pride in until his retirement.
Deeply rooted in the Waialua and Hale‘iwa community, Barney was known as a great cook, for his generosity, humor, and willingness to help. Alongside friends Dom Pascua and Frank De Silva, he helped organize the Hale‘iwa Sea Spree, raising funds for local schools and community organizations. He was also very involved with Pop Warner for many years.
Barney loved the ocean and spent countless hours fishing from his boat, which he proudly named after his daughter, Doral. Later, he opened the Haleiwa Ice House at the harbor—bringing the fish to him instead. After retiring from AT&T, he opened Kainoa’s Sports Bar, named for his grandson, where he created a gathering place for friends both old and new. He also sponsored an annual Turkey Trot for local golfers, one of many ways he supported the community.
A talented cook with a big heart, Barney was known for helping with countless parties—a lot of parties—and for always showing up with good food. Barney is survived by his wife, Roselani Oga, his children, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren, all of whom will deeply miss his presence.
