Alice Kendall Yoder's Obituary
Alice Yoder, 96 years young, died June 14, 2018 following a brief illness. Alice was born in Githumu, Kenya, to Lillian Kendall and Will Kendall. She grew up in Fresno, CA and attended Westervelt School in South Carolina. A graduate of Fresno State University, she married Paul Yoder. Living on Oahu since 1961, Alice worked for many years as ‘The Simplicity Lady,’ presenting Simplicity pattern fashion shows with High School Home Economic classes throughout the Islands. Earning her M.A. (1978) she taught at U.H. School of Fashion Design and Merchandising until her retirement. Following Paul’s death in 2003 she traveled many times to Kenya, raising money for a well, a commercial generator, computer network, surgical lighting, and many other needed improvements for the Githumu hospital and supporting orphanages for children with AIDS. She made her last trip to Kenya at age 94. A faithful follower of Jesus, Alice was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Honolulu at Koolau up until her death. In recent years she was recognized for her many contributions by the award of Lifetime Honorary Membership in Presbyterian Women’s Fellowship.
Alice is survived by children Dianne, Marilyn (Steve Creel), Jan (Gary Jewell), Paul (Joanna); grandchildren Colin (Abby), Keala (Sean), Maile (Ben), Evelyn, Ria (Aaron), Elsa, Will, Kendall; 6 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held on July 7 at 10:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Koolau, with visitation at 8:30.
