Bernard Lee Brown's Obituary
Bernard “Doc” Brown lived most of his life in Kane'ohe, Hawai'i. He moved to O'ahu from the East Coast in the 1950s after serving as a corpsman in the US Navy. For 38 years he worked as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) for the City & County of Honolulu. During his off-work hours, beginning in 1978 and continuing for over 20 years, he volunteered as an athletic trainer for the Castle High School football team where he became known to all as “Doc”. After retiring from City & County, he continued working as a medic for many years on locally filmed television and movie productions, including the entire run of the hit series, LOST.
Doc loved Hawai'i and his Kane'ohe community. If his wife sent him to pick up one item at the grocery store, guaranteed he would make stops to check in and talk story at Foodland, Times, Star Market, and Longs. To know Doc was to know that he ate raw garlic like candy, asked almost everyone he’d meet, “What high school?”, and whenever it was his time to take leave from a gathering, he’d depart with “Gotta go. Left the baby in the car! Gotta feed the horses!” or “Gotta go buy butter in Laie!”
A lover of all sports, especially baseball, he was a diehard Yankees fan to the end! In his younger years he was known to frequent the courts at the park for fiercely competitive pickup basketball games and played in the UH medical school intramural league.
Doc is survived by Julia, his loving wife of over 61 years, sons Sinclair (Debbie) Brown and Segard (John) Brown, stepson Joel Omilda and stepdaughter Julie (Leelan) Meheula; grandchildren Ua'i (Sean) Frank, Kawehi Meheula, Oli Boy Meheula, Ku'ulei (Makenna) Meheula, William Brown, Robert Brown, and 3 great-grandchildren Makenna, Tristan, and Logan Meheula.
The family wishes to express sincere appreciation and aloha to each and every one of the incredible caregivers at Kina'Ole Estate for the loving care and community they provided to Uncle Bernard and his family.
Services will be held Tuesday, July 9, 2024 at St. Ann Catholic Church, 46-129 Haiku Rd, Kane'ohe. Visitation at 10:00 am with funeral mass to follow at 11:00 am. Private burial at a later date.
