My condolences on the passing of Charles Eddinger. I did not know him but read about his study of the white eye and found his research paper online. I have observed the interspecific feeding helping of the white eye in my yard. A few sparrow chicks were trapped in a poorly built nest in my mango tree and their legs were entangled with human hair. Two white eyes were trying to feed these birds who were hanging upside down. A friend and I were able to release the chicks and put them in a nearby bush. One of the birds was stronger and flew away. The other we put in a box and it disappeared. Several times over the last few months the white eye couple have appeared and tweeted and buzzed around me while a juvenile sparrow appeared almost in front of me on an olive tree in my garage. I feel they were letting me know that it was the same sparrow chick I had helped save and it was healthy and ok. Thanks to Dr. Eddinger's study, I have understood that the chick was a sparrow. I kept wondering why it looked different from what I thought were its parents.
