I first met Thomas at Texas A&M University in September 1969. At the time, I was a bewildered youngster fresh off the plane from Hong Kong, to start my freshman year at Texas A&M. Thomas’ radiant smile and friendly demeanor immediately put me at ease. Later on, someone (I forgot who) told me that Thomas was already a sophomore after just one semester at A&M. I was profoundly impressed, thinking … WOW! What a smart guy! He’ll probably get his bachelor’s degree in 3 years! This guy is definitely someone to look up to! Since then Thomas had been my idol and my go-to person whenever I had a question on just about anything.
However, the divine power from above obviously had a different plan for Thomas - he was destined to be a shepherd for multiple classes of HK Aggies! During his third year, Thomas was elected the President of Chinese Students Association (CSA) at A&M. It was no surprise to anyone that he served the Chinese students community with an all-out effort. Thereupon, Thomas had become the unofficial “Foreign Student Advisor” at A&M, dedicated to serving a group of lucky Aggies who were mostly from Hong Kong. Throughout his tenure, his affable smiles, his contagious optimism and his selfless benevolence had touched so many lives that made him a true legend at A&M. I am sure he’ll be sorely missed by many.
To me, Thomas epitomized the ultimate in altruism. It was a distinct honor for me to have crossed path with such a distinguished individual during my lifetime, and to have worked with him closely on some of the student activities. Regretfully, since I left A&M in 1973 we had never met again face-to-face, other than a phone conversation and a few email exchanges many years ago. However, Thomas will always be my idol, and he will always live in my heart.
To Sophie and Jonathan, I am terribly sorry for your grievous loss. Please do take care of yourselves while you mourn, as I am sure that that’s what Thomas would have wanted to see from above. Rest assured that our thoughts and prayers will always be with you and your family.
