Clarence Akau's Obituary
Clarence Akau, age 89, passed away on February 24, 2024. He is survived by his children, Michael, Maurice, Melanie (Harbaksh), and Anthony (Ranelle); 17 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, and 5 great great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Abbie, his daughter, Stephanie, and his parents, Azalia and Frank Akau.
Clarence was born in Honolulu on October 20, 1934 and grew up humbly on Houghtaling road in Kalihi. As a teen, he had the opportunity to live with his aunty Rosie in San Francisco. Clarence attended the High School of Commerce in San Francisco and graduated from the last class in 1952. There is also where he met his beautiful wife of 70 years, Abbie. Clarence enjoyed football and played guard for the High school of Commerce. He was awarded the game ball once for his good line play and was called a “demon on defense”.
Clarence was hard-working and had a successful career in the car dealership business as a general manager for Hawaiian Motors, Island Dodge Maui, and other car dealerships.
Clarence believed strongly in education and working hard. He enjoyed talking stories, football, hunting, fishing, watching the news, and spending time with his family at the beach or at home. He also enjoyed new experiences and traveling. His travels took him to China, Europe, Mexico, other U.S. states, the Bahamas, and Japan. Clarence had the opportunity to be one of the first passengers on the Skyline, Hawaiʻi’s rail system.
At his request, there will not be a memorial service.
