Cleveland Chien-Fong Wu's Obituary
Dr. Cleveland Chien-Fong Wu peacefully passed away at his home in Honolulu, Hawaii on September 29, 2022. Born on September 2nd, 1939 to Taiwanese parents, Chien-Fong was the eldest of eight siblings and spent much of his childhood in Manchuria until his family fled the Chinese Civil War and settled in his mother’s hometown of Chiayi City, Taiwan. In his youth, he embraced the Christian faith which he kept for the rest of his life. A graduate of National Taiwan University College of Medicine, he started his medical career as a surgeon before deciding to pursue training in physical medicine and rehabilitation in the US. He completed his residency training at the University of Washington, where he also earned a Masters in Science.
Dr. Wu came to Honolulu in 1976 to work at the Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific where he was valued by patients and colleagues alike for his tireless work ethic, kindness, and easygoing nature. When he became a naturalized citizen, he adopted the name Cleveland, a name he took a liking to after his boss suggested it for him. Dr. Wu opened his own practice in the 1980s, where he focused on electrodiagnostic testing. His wife Emily managed his clinic, and he worked happily alongside her until his retirement in 2006. A lifelong fan of classical music, Cleveland particularly loved Mozart and Bach. He enjoyed attending orchestral performances, especially those by the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra.
Cleveland is survived by his wife of over 55 years, Emily Wu, and his daughters Jane and Susan, and son, Henry. He will be remembered as a hard-working father who dedicated his life to his family. His gentle, genuine demeanor and warm smile will be missed by all who were touched by his presence.
