Dorothy Jane Carvalho's Obituary
Dorothy Jane “DJ” Calistro Carvalho from Honolulu died on June 5, 2020 at the age of 90. She was born in Hanamaulu, Kauai. A short time later, her family moved to Kapahulu, Oahu where she grew up. She attended St. Augustine’s and St. Francis schools then attended the Philips Commercial School where she graduated at the age of 16 with a degree in accounting. In 1945, DJ was hired by New York Life Insurance. After 38 great years at the firm, she retired at the age of 55 to care for her mother. She had lost her dad the previous year whom she also cared for.
DJ was a dedicated wife, mother, Tutu, GG, sister, aunt, caregiver, churchgoer, and friend. She had a kind, thoughtful and generous spirit and was always helping anyone in need. She loved bowling and was the Secretary / Treasurer for her Bowling League at Pali Lanes for many years. She also loved gardening, playing BINGO, and spending time with her family and friends. DJ is survived by her 3 sons: Ernest Jr., of Big Island; Kenneth Sr. and Adrian, of Honolulu; and daughter-in-law Sandra, of Big Island. She also is survived by 4 grandsons: Jason (Helen), of Los Angeles; Logan (Aina), of Big Island; Kenneth Jr. and Chase, of Ohio; and 5 great-grandchildren: Wahine, Ku’ihi, and Kaneula, of Big Island; Cayden and Harper, of Los Angeles; and many cousins, nieces and nephews, of Kailua. A celebration of life is planned and services are private due to COVID-19. Only 20 people will be allowed in the chapel at a time, with a maximum of 50 guests rotating in and out.
