“Sonny”
1938 – April 29, 2026
Edward Kuamu Makaiwi Pelekai Jr., affectionately known to all as “Sonny,” passed away peacefully on April 29, 2026, at the age of 87, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born and raised in Hoolehua, Molokaʻi, Sonny carried the spirit of the friendly isle with him throughout his life. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy, a foundational chapter that shaped his dedication and strong work ethic. Following his military service, he went on to build a distinguished career at Hawaiian Electric, retiring after more than 25 years of loyal and dedicated service.
Sonny was also a pillar in the local sports community, dedicating 30 years of his life as an OIA and Pop Warner official, sharing his deep love for the game. He shared that love with his kids and grandkids by watching all and every sport they played.
A quiet but very wise man, Sonny never stayed idle; he was always moving, working, and finding joy in staying busy. One of his greatest passions was cooking Hawaiian food, a labor of love he cherished sharing alongside his wife and ʻohana. He lived a life deeply rooted in kindness and community, and he will be remembered for his warm heart, his steadfast work ethic, and the enduring legacy of love he leaves behind.
Sonny is survived by his beloved wife, Donna Pelekai, and his brother, Donald (Gene) Pelekai.
He is also survived by his children, Tony Pelekai, Douglas Pelekai, Lorraine Pelekai, Tishalynn Reed, Kehaulani Pelekai, and Edward Pelekai.
His legacy lives on through his grandchildren, Nikolas Pelekai, Ren Tanabe, ʻIolana Pelekai, Nuuanu Hookano-Pelekai, Kaleʻu Reed, Laʻakea Reed, Raiah Pelekai, Hope Reed, Kuamu Pelekai, and Kaiwa Pelekai; his great-grandchildren, Apikalia Martinez-Blakley and Leila Pelekai; as well as his nieces and nephews whom he loved deeply.
Sonny now rests in peace with those who went before him, including his daughter, Angela; his sister, Ochie Bush; and his brother, Franklin Makaiwi.
