Ethel Sun Dong Chun's Obituary
Services for Ethel Sun Dong (Ching) Chun, 96, of Hawaii Kai, will be held at 12:30 PM on Friday, March 11, 2016 at Hawaiian Memorial Chapel located at 45-425 Kamehameha Hwy in Kaneohe. Visitation will be from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the chapel prior to the service. Mrs. Chun died March 3, 2016 at Hi’olani Care Center at Kahala Nui. She was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on December 25, 1919.
Ethel graduated from McKinley High School in 1938 before marrying the love of her life, Wallace Bo Wah Chun on March 4, 1939. She loved traveling the world with her family to such places as Japan, China, Europe, and across the United States. Ethel enjoyed playing the ukulele, completing jigsaw and crossword puzzles, counted-cross-stitching, and cake decorating. She lovingly served as the Quality Control Manager for her husband’s many craft projects and added the fine details to his works of art. After caring for her elderly in-laws for many years, Mrs. Chun was worked as a Sales Associate at Sears for over 20 years at both the Ala Moana and Pearlridge Shopping Center locations. Ethel liked catching up with her former classmates from the Royal Elementary School and her friends from the Newtown Estates where she lived for many years prior to residing at the Hawaii Kai Retirement Center.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Wallace Bo Wah Chun of Honolulu; her daughter, Cynthia Wai Kin (Chun) Saiki of Killeen, Texas; her parents, Ching Tong and Ching Lum Kam Shun; her brothers, James CG Ching of Waimanalo and Peter JP Ching of Honolulu; her sisters, Alice Chun Lau and Eva Young of Honolulu; and her grandson-in-law, Russell F. Overheu, of Austin. She is survived by her son, Mr. Stephen K. H. (Candace Wilkins) Chun of California; son-in-law, Mr. Owen H. Saiki of Killeen; five granddaughters, Mrs. Martin (Shellie Mei Saiki) Campos and Mrs. Timothy (Stephanie Li-Ann Saiki) Young both of Harker Heights; Mrs. Russell (Stacie Linn Saiki) Overheu of Austin; Ms. Lindsey Chun of San Jose, California, and Ms. Sidney Chun of Seattle, Washington; and grandson, Mr. Scott (Sylvia Guerrero) Saiki of Killeen; seven great-grandchildren: Brandon Anthony Campos, Mrs. John (Brittany Marie) Leach, Zachary Michael Young, Jacob Scott Young, Daniel Christopher Young, Sarah Alexis Saiki, Steven Bo Saiki; two great-great-grandchildren, MeiLinn Li-Ann and Mai-Lee Ann Campos-Leach; and sister-in-law, Mrs. Gladys Ching. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and godchildren.
