Sonny was born on June 28, 1936 in Honolulu-Oahu, Hawaiian Islands to Pilar Dela Cruz Antonio and Eusebio Sison Manaois Sr – who immigrated from the Philippines – as the third child. He graduated from Farrington High School. In June 1963, he married Betty Jane Lillian Gascon Manaois, in San Francisco. They resided on Haight Street until 1968 when they purchased their first home in Fremont. During this time they acquired land in El Dorado County and by 1973 they built their final home in Union City.
For many years, our parents shared a common passion for travel. Their journey included various states such as Florida, New York, Alaska, Virginia, Washington, Oregon, Arizona, and Nevada. They also traveled to international countries such as Canada, Hong Kong, Philippines, Croatia, Italy, St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, Caribbean, Mediterranean, Jamaica, Mexico, just to name a few. Because dad made the right financial decisions early on, he was able to retire at 65. His choices enabled mom and dad to do what they wanted when they wanted. Prior to mom’s passing, she was able to celebrate one last birthday together in Las Vegas with dad when he turned 81 then traveled to Arizona, Washington, and Oahu-Hawaii.
Sonny pursued multiple talents, but was most recognized for his passion for classic automobiles: 57 Chevy Belair, 65 Ford Mustang, 57 Ford Ranchero, 67 Buick Skylark, 72 Vega, 62 Oldsmobile, MG, 240 Nissan, and some domestic vehicles like the Maverick, Ford Pinto, Kia and the Green Dodge Family Van.
Sonny was a member at the local Senior Citizen Center where he competed in pool tournaments. For many years, he was an avid bowler with the Hawaiian Imua Club, Fremont Bowl, Manor Bowl, Cloverleaf Bowl, and Holiday Bowl. In addition, he joined the senior and travel league bowling clubs.
Sonny was an outdoorsman. Family outings included camping, fishing, abalone diving, digging for clams and mussels, picking sea snails, crabbing and in addition to harvesting limu. Other activities included golfing and supporting his grandchildren’s sporting events such as baseball, basketball, football, swimming, and hula. He enjoyed family gatherings that included poker parties, a must have bar-b-que oysters and pig ears, grilling steaks and eating it with tomato, onion, and bagaong. He would bar-b-que bitter melon and add ebi and patis.
As a journeyman welder, he would design and make commercial size baking sheets, poi pots, pans for kalua pig, a rotisserie for huli huli chicken, and more. These were handcrafted with love for the many luaus over the years.
Sonny came from humble beginnings and overcame challenges throughout his years showing compassion by opening his home to numerous friends and family members. He will be known for his generosity, love for cooking the pig for luaus, assisting family/friends with fixing their cars, his knowledge for cars, and cruising down Fremont Blvd in his 57 Chevy Belair. The family is deeply grateful for the overwhelming outpour of love, prayers, and support from a flourishing number of people.
