Faustina "Tina" Ibalio Ignacio Lazo's Obituary
Faustina “Tina” Ibalio Ignacio Lazo, 93, went to be with the Lord on May 18, 2023. Tina was at peace, surrounded by her husband of nearly 70 years, Jose “Joe” Lazo; and their five children, Sharon (Don) Nakamoto, Sonny (Robin), Joel, Sr. (Javic), Beth (Juan) Garza, and Joyce (Mark) Mickelson. She also had nine grandchildren, six step-grandchildren and three great-grand-children.
The only child of Judge Andres Respicio Ignacio and Andrea Ravelo Ibalio, Tina was born in Laoag City, Philippines, on August 29, 1929. Tina showed resilience early on after she was orphaned at a young age. She earned a Bachelor of Science from Far Eastern University in Manila and a Master’s in Religious Education from Baptist Bible Seminary.
Tina was an educator for over four decades. In 1968, she joined the faculty at Hawaii Baptist Academy (HBA), shortly after traveling by herself with her five young children to join her husband in Honolulu. Tina had an impact on her students in the 27 years she taught science at HBA with her compassion, sense of humor, and memorable lessons. She continued to serve as a substitute teacher into her 80s. In 2019, she was honored with HBA’s Distinguished Service to God Legacy award. Tina also served the community and God – helping her husband at Olivet Baptist Church and putting on several events in the Filipino community.
Celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 29 at Olivet Baptist Church (1775 S Beretania St.) from 2 to 4 p.m. Attire: Aloha wear.
