Fusako Eileen Chinen's Obituary
Fusako Eileen Chinen was born on March 18, 1929 in Lahaina, Maui. She was lovingly cared for by family through her illness, until she passed peacefully in her long-time home in Kalihi Valley. Gracious and hospitable, she served God by ministering to family, friends, acquaintances, and strangers alike, always with generosity and kindness.
Every customer who entered her restaurant, the New Kukui Café was treated as family. Never critical or judgmental, she received and loved everyone with a warm smile and genuine openness. While known for her awesome “sweet and sour spareribs”, her legacy will be her Christian faith which gave her passion for utilizing all her gifts, including cooking to share God’s hospitality and love.
She is survived by her son, Gerald Chinen, and grandson, Benjamin Chinen of Walnut Creek, CA; her sisters: Mitzi Yoshimoto and Nancy (Bob) Okuda both of Honolulu, and many nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved and adored.
Donations may be given in her name to the Kuakini Medical Center and the Wellspring Covenant Church. A Service of Remembrance will be held on October 31, 10:00 via zoom. For link information, please contact: [email protected].
