I took a walk today up to the park, that is just up the street from my Dad and Mom's house. I sat down and was watching a youth soccer game. As I was sat watching the game, I noticed that out of twenty people or so, six of them at one point or another, littered on the ground! (us Portuguese are always taking notice of everything going on in our presence!) Right away my Dad's voice went of in my head, just as if he were sitting next to me. "JACKASS,I wish people wouldn't do that, because it only takes a little extra effort to throw that in the trash can." Why can't people just look at it like that? If they would just think of how beautiful our Islands would be if we had no litter at all! Not that this isn't the most beautiful place to live, cause in my eyes this it. Anyway, as I sat there soaking in all of those thoughts,it came to me, a warm feeling and a voice in my head said "Mike go pick up all the trash you see, also try to reach your brothers' and sisters' and also everyone they know, and ask them to do the same." If all of us would vow to no longer litter, I think in our life time we could see, at least here, a litter free Hawaii. So since everything has to have a starting point, I say "why not start here on our beautiful Islands,Hawaii! Show the world and be looked up to as the people who got the ball rolling. How proud we would be." I was feeling all excited as I sat there in the park. At once I got up and walked back and forth picking up trash all over the park, as much as I could find. When I finished, I felt very proud of my accomplishment. As I walked home,I was thinking to myself would it not be out of this world if this really came true! If I had just started a new"FAD", of Hawaii being the first to have litter free Islands. How proud we all would be. I personally vow never to litter ever again as long as I live; Also,to try every chance I get to pick up any litter I can.I only hope that this will make a difference and that it is something I can see with my eyes in my lifetime. Wouldn't my Dad be proud!! This is my tribute to you Daddy.
