Grace York Mee Ching 's Obituary
Grace Ching’s “Tour of Duty”
Grace York Mee (Hu) Ching was “relieved of her earthly duties” and returned to be with our Lord on Tuesday, January 14, 2014. She completed 79 years of “active duty service”: First as a daughter to York Hon & Kam Ann (Chang) Hu [both deceased], and then as a wife for 57 years to Norman Y.S. Ching; mother to Randal Ching (Joan, and daughters Megan & Erin), Yvonne D'Andrea (Jonas) & Gordon Ching; sister to Alfred & Joseph Hu; and aunt to many nieces and nephews.
Grace graduated from Maryknoll High School in 1952 and attended the University of Hawaii for 2 years before working at GMAC, marrying, and serving as an Air Force wife for 25 years beginning in April 1957. This duty began in Honolulu, HI and took her to Harlingen, TX; San Bernardino, CA; Honolulu, HI; Duluth, MN; Orlando, FL; Sacramento, CA; and Tai Chung, Taiwan; ending with a tour of duty at Hickam AFB, HI and retirement in Honolulu, HI.
During these “tours,” Grace enjoyed sharing her cooking and hula dancing skills with other Air Force wives. She received “R&R” (vacations while an Air Force wife) with her husband & children in: Okinawa, Japan, Hong Kong & Thailand; and later during retirement in: China, Portugal, Spain, New Zealand, Australia, England, Ireland, Scotland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Canada.
In 2001, Grace was diagnosed with a rare neuro-degenerative disease (Multiple Systems Atrophy) and her health began a slow decline. Though she was determined to regain her health, this was not to be. Undeterred, she derived strength from her faith in God which enabled her to remain HOPEFUL and PERSERVERE despite her affliction. Grace was a courageous, kind-hearted and caring person who loved and was loved by everyone she knew.
Her final journey takes her to a reunion with her parents; brothers (Richard & Herbert); sisters (Mabel Sitch & Eleanor Ching); and numerous relatives & friends in The House of our Lord.
Grace will be sorely missed!!
