James "Cam" Campbell Shuford III's Obituary
James Campbell Shuford, III, known and loved by all as “Cam,” died March 3, 2018 of a heart attack while biking with friends near his home in Kailua, Hawaii. Cam was born November 25, 1940 in Chicago, Illinois, the oldest child of James C. Shuford, Jr. and Frances (Weir). He is survived by his wife, Rita; daughter, Susan Taylor of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; two grandchildren, a great-grandchild, and brothers John, of Raleigh, NC, and Bob, of Evanston, IL. He was predeceased by his parents and dear sister, Ellen Roberts.
Cam grew up in Evanston, IL, and attended Episcopal High School in Alexandria, VA, where his father also attended. He graduated from Denison University, Granville, OH in 1963 and did graduate study at University of Oregon. Excelling in sports through high school and college, Cam was active throughout his life, training for numerous triathlons and, when his knees would no longer permit, he fell in love with long-distance biking, participating frequently in competitions. Along the way, he and Rita made friends in many places and, when traveling, rarely needed to book into a hotel. Cam arrived at his 50th college class reunion in Ohio on his bike, having traveled 400 miles from Chicago, weary but triumphant.
Moving to Kailua in 1995 Cam and Rita found in Hawaii a home that truly was home—the natural beauty, the outdoors life and, especially, the “aloha spirit” of the Hawaiian people. As a youth guidance counselor in the Kailua and Honolulu schools, Cam was a friend and role model to the many young people he helped over the years, especially the most troubled. A skilled counselor, he combined his years of professional experience with a genuine love of young people, a ready humor and positive spirit, and a love of life.
Cam generously shared his zest for life with family, friends and colleagues, and like his father, friend to many and always open to playing a trick on someone. His end came suddenly and too soon, and he will be deeply missed by all.
Services will be held on Monday, March 19, 2018, at Hawaiian Memorial Park Mortuary (45-425 Kamehameha Hwy., Kaneohe, HI 96744). Visitation at 10:00 a.m. with service to follow at 11:30 a.m. Lei accepted.
