Johanna "Jo" Ayers' Obituary
Celebrating the Life of Johanna “Jo” Ayers October 17th, 1928 – November 29th, 2025
We celebrate the beautiful life of Johanna “Jo” Ayers, who was born in Morgantown, West Virginia. Jo lived most of her life in California, Hawaii, and Arizona. Her years were filled with music, dance, the joy of learning, and the spirit of adventure, along with kindness and positivity that brightened every stage she stepped onto.
She earned her BA at the University of Redlands before embarking on a career as a stewardess with United Airlines in the early 1950s, embracing a spirit of independence and exploration long before it was common for women to do so. Later, she received her MEd in Counseling and Guidance from the University of Hawaii, reflecting her belief in honest, supportive living and giving her the tools to help others grow.
Music and dance were Jo’s heartbeat throughout her life. While raising her family in California, she sang with Sweet Adelines and enjoyed bowling. In Hawaii, she sang and performed with Hawaii Community Theater, Hawaii Opera Theater, and participated in annual Messiah services. She also loved studying and competing in ballroom dance. In Arizona, she continued to sing and ballroom dance, as well as excel in line dance, sharing her love of movement and music wherever she went.
Friends remember Jo as kind, supportive, patient, honest, and resilient, carrying a gentle presence that encouraged others to be their best selves.
Jo was married to the love of her life, Don, for over 30 years. Their partnership was filled with deep affection, laughter, and unwavering devotion.
Jo’s greatest joy was her family. She is lovingly remembered by her children—Steve, Susie, Leslie (and husband Stuart), and Laura; her grandchildren—Tatum, Kala, Dustin, Kelsey, Zachary, Noah, Daniel, and Jarod; and her great-grandchildren—Lily, Evie, Elliott, Willa, Haisley, and Charlie. Their lives continue to reflect the love, humor, and generosity she shared so freely.
Whenever feasible, Jo requested that those who knew her honor their friendship by performing random acts of kindness each day for others, allowing her spirit of compassion to continue through the actions of those she touched.
Jo’s legacy lives on each time a familiar song plays, or a caring word is shared. We honor her life with gratitude for the joy she brought and the kindness she modeled for everyone she met.
