John Kamana Kapele Sr.'s Obituary
John Kamana Kapele, Sr., 79, of Kaneohe, passed away June 28, 2017 at his home. Born October 19, 1937 in Honolulu to parents Frank Kaui Kapele and Mabel Rodrigues Kapale, John retired after 30 years as a physical education schoolteacher at King Intermediate, Campbell, Castle and Kalani High Schools, and was also part owner of the former JP & D Body and Fender in McCully. In his earlier years, he also played defensive end and offensive lineman for the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1960-1962, the Philadelphia Eagles in 1963, and the New York Jets in 1964 before retiring from professional football.
He is survived by sons, John Kamana Kapele, Jr., Naeole Kapele and Kai'ana Kapele; daughters, Mahina Kapele-Worhy and Auli'ilani Kapele Rosa; 10 grandchildren; sister, Piilani (Domingo) Nazara. John was predeceased by beloved wife Cordellia "Aunty Pua" Kapele, who passed away May 1,2017.
Funeral services for John will be held on Saturday, August 12, 2017, at the Waikalua Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 45-150 Waikalua Road, Kaneohe, Hawaii 96744. Visitation will be from 9:00-11:00 a.m. Service 11:00 a.m. with a reception to follow. Graveside service over ashes 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 14, 2017, at Greenhaven Memorial Park Cemetery, Waikalua Road, Kaneohe, Hawaii.
