John Kau, Sr.'s Obituary
John Kau Sr of Waimanalo, Hawaii passed away on Thursday, February 25, 2016. He was 87 years old. Born to William Kilikiano Kau Jr and Jennie Mailekini Kealoha of Honolulu, Hawaii on June 21, 1928. He was born and raised in Moanalua Gardens later moving to Kalihi. Attending Konawaena Elementary, Kalakaua Intermediate and graduating from Farrington High School.
In High School he excelled at the sport of football and was fondly known by his friends and schoolmates as "One Track" because he would never let anything distract his train of thought. After graduation he began his career with the Hawaii Army National Guard. He held various positions such as Ammunition Technician, Heavy Machinery Mechanic and Missile Technician. In 1988, after 30+ years of service with the Hawaii Army National Guard, John retired with the rank of Sergeant First Class.
On July 23, 1949 he married the love of his life Edna Samera. They eventually settled in Waimanalo to raise their five children. Son John Kau Jr and daughters Mary "Querida" Andrews, Kathleen "Blanca" Lopez, Pearl (Peter) Powell and Edna "Lei" Konanui. Some of his favorite activities included raising chickens, playing cribbage, mah jong and poker. He had a green thumb and could make just about anything grow, including his favorite roses for his wife and orchids among other things. He loved to travel, especially to Las Vegas, where he would spend countless hours on the slot machines!
Services for Mr. Kau will be held on Monday, March 21, 2016 at Hawaiian Memorial Park Mortuary; visitation will be held from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. Service to begin at 10:00 a.m. Committal Service to follow 1:00 p.m. at the Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery Committal Shelter with Military Honors to be rendered.
Mr Kau will be known as punctual ("Hurry up and wait" is a motto he adopted from his years of military service.), dependable, sarcastic (a trait he so proudly passed on to his children and grandchildren), stubborn (also passed on), and being "Hawaiian". This Superman will live on forever in the lives he's touched throughout his lifetime and in his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
