John Kaehuokekai Lewis' Obituary
John Kaehuokekai Lewis, loving husband, father, brother, uncle & friend, went home to be with Jesus on October 19, 2017. He passed peacefully at his home in Ewa Beach, HI at the age of 67. John was born to the late John Lewis & Hattie Cathcart on August 13, 1950. He was the 2nd youngest of 11 children.
John served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War & was very proud to be a veteran. He continued his service for his country as a Marine Machinist Mechanic at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard. He worked there for 36 years & retired as a Marine Machinist Instructor.
John was a humble & wise man who always had time to answer a question or give advice and encouragement to everyone around him. He loved spending time with his family. His favorite past times were fishing & diving. He was a fan of the UH volleyball team. He loved watching Hawaii high school football & loved supporting his grandson, children, niece & nephew at their sporting events with his wife. John’s most recent travels include trips to Disneyland & Moloka’i. Just two weeks prior to his passing he returned to where his mother was raised in Moloka’i & celebrated his sister's birthday & his wedding anniversary with his loved ones there.
Left to honor John & remember his love are his wife Rosie of 36 years; his children Maggie Lewis, Momi (Philip) Leuta, Justina “Hoku” (Eli “J.R.”) Cruz, John (Mary) Lewis III & Joseph Lewis; his 5 grandsons Irvin Leuta, Ivan Lewis, Isaiah Lewis-Leuta, Isaac Lewis-Leuta & La’akea Cruz; his sisters Radiant Chase, Hail Estrella & Joanie Martinez; his brother Bullie Lewis & many cousins, nieces & nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; his brothers Jerry Anahu, Abraham Hobbs, Jack Hobbs, & Leroy Akau; & his sisters Haunani (Mel) Kiaaina & Ginger (Joe) Kaylor.
John’s celebration of life will be held at Hawaiian Memorial Park in Kaneohe on Friday, November 17 with viewing for the family at 10am, public viewing at 11am, service at 12 & closing with fellowship until 1pm. At 3pm, he will be laid to rest at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Punchbowl. The family gratefully declines flowers. Photos can be shared at [email protected].
He is dearly missed by his loved ones, who find comfort & celebrate the fact that he is at peace and with his Father in heaven.
