Juling Teding Salve's Obituary
JULING TEDING SALVE Juling Teding Salve was 98, when she passed away on January 16, 2013. Born on March 18, 1914, on Kauai, she spent her childhood in Los Angeles and returned to Oahu where she became a legend to her family and an inspiration to many. Entertainment and hard work was her life that she shared with her late husband, Modesto C. Salve. In the 40’s she was in the jewelry business and was co-owner of Hawaii Jewelers on Bethel Street. She was “bling” before the word was in vogue. Together Juling and Modesto created a tropical paradise at their residence on Palolo Avenue with a multi-terraced backyard filled with tropical gardens, exotic plants, fruit trees, fish pond and a lower patio with a 25 foot monkey pod bar overlooking the river where hundreds would dance the night away to music filtered through the trees. Friends were greeted into this oasis with a glass waiting to be filled from a fountain flowing with champagne. In the house on any evening you would find local and noted musicians jamming on the grand piano, basses & brasses, guitars, ukulele, it was more than jazzy…singing and dancing. In 1950 Modesto & Juling opened Hale O Laau where Modesto created woodwork that would put Honolulu on the map for Hollywood Stars. His bowls and carvings became famous and their store walls were filled with pictures of movie stars and entertainers posed with them holding their new art pieces. In the 1980’s their business turned to imports and then they began a career of entertainment. Together they started the Hawaiiana Rondalla, a group of retired musicians and ladies who loved to sing and dance. Modesto was the maestro and Juling was the choreographer and costume designer. When Modesto died, Juling also became the successor maestro. It was a lively young at heart group that enjoyed making people happy and expressing their love of music. Their repertoire included music from all cultures in Hawaii and songs in more than thirty native languages. For over two decades they worked from the Lanakila Senior Center and regularly had gigs at the shopping centers – Ala Moana, Kahala, Pearlridge, opening of the legislature and more, and they regularly entertained at rest homes on Oahu sharing good cheer. During the holidays, they performed several times a week. Juling was innovative and her dancing girls’ performances in their sequined dresses included a risqué number to provocative music in which they turned around and their entire outfit was a different color of sparkly sequins! Even Juling’s beloved poodle Pierre wore fancy clothes as he danced to songs she created for him. Juling, a petite, glamorous beauty was bigger than life! She was the small package of beauty with eyes that twinkled and a smile that could melt your heart! Modesto and Juling were honored with recognition for their community work. They both received the Super Seniors award. Juling was the president of the Filipino Women’s Civic Club of Hawaii 1952-55, an active member of the Las Damas Club, a former director of the Hawaii Cancer Society and active volunteer with Catholic Charities. In 1972 she represented Hawaii in the National Chicken Cooking Contest held in New Orleans and won first place for her chicken liver appetizer! In 2001, then Governor Cayetano presented Juling the Filipino Society of Hawaii’s Award of Appreciation to the Hawaiiana Rondalla for their outstanding service. Her family who dearly miss her include: daughters Alita "Vi" Arkin, Bobbin "Maria Luz" Fasone, Sylvia Holland (Bob), son Maurice Kelly Salve (Mary). She was predeceased by husband Modesto C.
