Kay Kahalelaukoa Whitford Alexander's Obituary
age 81, died at home in the presence of family. Kay was born to Winifred Willing &Hugh Whitford on August 29, 1936 and was the 8th of 10 children. Kay joined the Army in 1954 and was trained/served as a nurse. After completing her two year military service, Kay chose to further her learning and attended college, graduating from Church College of Hawaii, currently known as Brigham Young University Hawaii, with her Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. She began AND ended her teaching career at Kaneohe Elementary School as a Kindergarten teacher with the Department of Education, retiring in 1995. While she had no biological children of own, she truly positively influence the lives of MANY children through her career as a Kindergarten teacher and then as a ""Kupuna" in the Windward School District once retired from the Department of Education. As a part of her involvement in the Kupuna program, Kay decided to go back to school to take classes in Hawaiian Language and became proficient in both the oral and written language of her Hawaiian ancestry. Kay was also an accomplished musician including her beautiful soprano voice, ukulele playing and writing/performing her own original music. While working in the Kupuna program, she wrote many songs which the Kupuna learned and sang as a part of their curriculum and as they traveled during the summer break as a part of their training. Kay enjoyed traveling with her Kupuna group as they visited the outer islands and New Zealand.
Kay is survived by her eternal companion Gary N.H. Alexander, step-sons: Alan W. Alexander (Mary) & Prins K. Alexander; 4 grandchildren: Makana, Hoku, Jade and Kamakana Alexander; and numerous nieces & nephews.
Services will be held on Friday, February 9, 2018 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Kaneohe Stake Center located at 46-117 Halaulani Street, Kaneohe HI 96744.
Viewing/Visitation: 9:00 a.m.
Services: 10:30 a.m.
Burial: 1:00 p.m. at the Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery located at 45-349 Kamehameha Highway, Kaneohe HI 96744
