Lawrence Gi Heen Chang's Obituary
Lawrence Gi Heen Chang, 78, of Kaneohe, passed away January 22, 2016. He was born March 3, 1937 in Honolulu, Hawaii to parents Nai Man Chang and Gertrude Chang, and was the fifth of seven children. He graduated in the class of 1955 from St. Louis School and also earned a Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree from the University of Hawaii. On June 17, 1967, he married the love of his life, Les Chang, in Managua, Nicaragua, and together they had two children, Lawrence and Lizette. In 1993, after 34 years of service as a drafter, he retired from Hawaiian Telephone Company. From 1955 to 1959 he served in the United States Air Force in Libya, and was the team captain for the U.S. Air Force volleyball team. He was also active in the Oo Syak Gee Lu Chinese Society and served as its President from 1975-1976. He was also a parishioner at St. Ann Catholic Church in Kaneohe. A gentleman, he was a funny, charming, warm and happy person who enjoyed playing the ukulele, singing, painting and traveling; he loved Hawaiian music.
Lawrence is survived by his son, Lawrence Emilio (Teodora) Chang; daughter, Lizette Chang-Zahn; hanai son, Christopher Zahn; granddaughter, Fiamma Zahn; brothers, Alvin (Jade) Chang, Ernest (Lillian)Chang, Leonard Chang; sister, Betty Chun.
In celebration of his life, a visitation will be held on Thursday, February 11, 2016, from 5:30-9:00 p.m. at Diamond Head Mortuary; evening service will begin at 6:30 p.m. A second visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Friday, February 12, 2016, at St. Ann Church in Kaneohe. Family remembrances will begin at 11:00 a.m., followed by a Mass at 11:45 a.m., and burial to follow at 1:00 p.m. at Valley of the Temples Memorial Park. Aloha attire is suggested.
