Leonora "Nora" Rodrigues Santos 's Obituary
Leonora "Nora" R. Santos was born on January 5, 1935 in Kekaha, Kauai. She was the youngest of 6 children of Frank Santos and Lucy Rodrigues. Her siblings are Benny (deceased), Mary "Ninning" (deceased), Jerry (deceased), Joseph (deceased), and Candida. Her father Frank passed away when she was 5 years old, and her mother Lucy remarried. She was raised by her mother and stepfather, Alejandro "Tata" Acain. She attended Kekaha Elementary and Waimea High School on Kauai. Upon graduation from Waimea, she entered the Holy Family Convent in Manitowac,Wisconsin. She graciously served the Roman Catholic Church and remained a Franciscan nun for 18 years. She was known as Sr. Nuncieta. Her profession allowed her to travel throughout the US, Europe, and the Philippines. She left the Sisterhood and lived with her sister Ninning Hookano in.Kaneohe,Oahu. She enjoyed working as a lay teacher for St. Anne's Catholic School. She later moved to Nuuanu and worked as a lay teacher for Cathedral Catholic School. After several years she was promoted to principal of Cathedral School. Later, she applied for and was accepted as one of four Associate Superintendents of Catholic Schools. Upon her retirement in 1996, she and her sister Ninning moved to Waialua to live with their sister Candida Santiago. Their Uncle James "Jimmy" Rodrigues would often refer to them as the "Golden Girls Of Waialua." She was an active member of the Waialua Parish and Community. Unfortunately In her twilight years, she developed severe health problems. Nora was called to enter the Pearly Gates on January 27, 2014
Nora was loved by all of her family--the Hookano, Santiago, and Santos families. She gave so much love in return. Her priorities in life was praise and worship to Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ first and her family next. Words that come to mind to describe her are: awesome, funny, disciplined, educated, giving, loyal, and strict yet compassionate.
Nora is survived by her sister Candida (David) Santiago, Sisters in Law: Carol (Jerry) Santos and Gloria (Benny) Santos, numerous nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews, great-grand and great-great grand nieces and nephews.
Services to celebrate her life will be on Friday, Feb. 21, 2014 at Our Lady Of The Mount Church in Kalihi. Viewing will be from 8:30 a.m to 10:30 a.m. Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. followed by burial at the Valley of the Temples Cemetery in Kaneohe at 12 noon. Lunch to follow.
