Lewis Sheridan Trusty (Lew), 77, of Honolulu, Hawaii passed away at 1 p.m. (HST) on September 20, 2020.
Lew was born in Pasadena, CA March 18, 1943 to Frances Waskowski and Lum Sherman Trusty. Lew was an only child.
He graduated from Pasadena High School in 1961. Then attended Occidental College studying economics and graduated with the class of 1965. Graduate studies were completed at the University of Southern California (U.S.C.) where he received an MBA in Real Estate Finance. Followed by an MA in Cinema. His master thesis film, “Silent Forest”, a documentary film about the kelp beds of Southern California won countless National and International Film festival awards.
Lew’s passions were photography and the ocean. Anything to do with the ocean wether underwater snorkeling or SCUBA diving to surfing, wind surfing, outrigger canoe paddling and sailing on the surface. He combined these into becoming a renowned underwater photographer, cameraman and videographer.
He combined his business knowledge and artistic talents while he worked as a real estate broker and investor, independent film maker, and professor at Hawaii Pacific University. Lew first started teaching in the business school. Then joined the film and media arts department. He inspired students to produce films and media for non-profit groups including the film for the Pearl Harbor Memorial and Shriners Hospital. He led a group of students to South Africa to produce a film about AIDS education. Some of his independent educational films included “Hawaii Underwater”, Underwater Hawaii DVD postcards, “Baby’s Underwater Adventure” and “Monk Seal Blues.”
He was a life member of the Pasadena Masonic Lodge and Al Malaikah Shrine in CA. On Oahu he was a member of the Aloha Shriners and Order of the Eastern Star, Leahi Chapter where he served as Worthy Patron. Lew was a member of Central Union Church for over 20 years and served several years on their Board of Deacons. He was a member of the Hui Nalu Canoe Club and Hawaii Yacht Club.
Survived by two spouses, five children and 6 grandchildren:
Mary Nevens (married 1967-1975) and their children Kimberly Trusty DeAllen, Kelly Trusty Vosburg Clark (Daniel) and grandchildren Molly Vosburg Rinkel (Scott), Logan Vosburg, Abigail DeAllen and Eleanor DeAllen.
Christine Vanderpool Meier (married 1978-2009) and their children Lucas Trusty, Janelle Trusty Dante (George) and step-son Keith Meier and grandchildren Talon Meier and Cade Meier.
Lew is preceded in death by his parents Frances and Lum Trusty.
