Celebrating the Life of Loretta Ellen Kalama
Born on November 19, 1934 in Waimea, Kauai
Her parents were Alfred and Francis Souza
She was the second of three daughters and attended Roosevelt High School. After graduation, she married Edward Kalama, a soldier in the U. S. Army. Together they traveled throughout Europe and the United States. When her husband retired after 20 years of service, they returned to Hawaii and lived in Pearl City. They had four children, Kaui, Scott, Lori, and Keely; seven grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. Loretta was married for 61 years until her husband’s passing in 2016.
Loretta worked in healthcare billing for Leeward Clinic, the Fronk Clinic, and St. Francis Hospital. After retirement, she was actively involved in playing racquetball and volleyball with her husband and her large group of friends. Her favorite memories included winning a racquetball tournament with her husband and celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.
She was a lifelong supporter of the University of Hawaii athletics programs, especially as a 30-year season ticket holder for Hawaii football. Loretta is survived by her sisters Marilynne Grilho and Shirley Lewis; daughters Ellen Kaui Kalama Clark, Lori Kalama-Bartz (Terry) and Keely Kalama-Lakey (Mike); son Ed “Scott” Kalama Jr; and her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
