Magdalena "Maggie" Caban Macanas' Obituary
Celebrating the Life of Magdalena Caban Macanas. affectionately known as "Maggie". She was born in Kahuku, Hawaii on June 15, 1932 and died on September 25, 2014 at Kahuku Medical Center. Her parents were Heraldo L. Caban and Melchora C. Timbreza. She was the eldest child of seven children and she had two brothers, Alfredo and Simplicio Caban and one sister, Juanita Molina, along with two brothers and a sister that died in infancy.
She was a Graduate of the Class of 1950 from Kahuku High School. Her High School Quote was "Reserved but ambitious"; that's our "Maggie". After graduation she began her work career as a Lab Technician at Kahuku Sugar Mill. She then took the Civil Service Test, where she scored within the top 1% and therefore began her career as a State of Hawaii employee working with various agencies including the Department of Education, the Board of Water Supply and the Department of Transportation where she retired in 1993. When asked which job she enjoyed the most she replied, "I liked them all because it allowed me to meet some very important people."
She lived in Kahuku. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arcadio Macanas, and sons, Rodwin, Norlan, and Edward. She is survived by her three sons, Dalmar (Paula) Macanas, Meldon (Heather) Macanas, and Aronne Macanas; one daughter, Arlene (David) Zlotucha; 20 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Alfredo Caban and Simplicio (Leonora) Caban; sister, Juanita (Benedicto) Molina. Maggie's life was centered around her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her great-great-grandchildren.
Maggie was a lifelong member of the St. Roch's Catholic Parish in Kahuku. She enjoyed traveling to see her children across the United States from North Carolina, Texas, Utah and California. When she wanted to learn something that interested her, she was diligent and determined, she taught herself as an adult how to play the piano which had been her desire since childhood. She was also very strong-willed which was a very distinct quality about her that those close to her knew and appreciated. She leaves behind a loving family who will carry on her life lessons, strengths to endure, her legacy, and how she lived.
Visitation to her funeral service will be from 10:30-11:30 a.m. to be held at St. Roch's Catholic Church in Kahuku; Mass to begin at 11:30 a.m. Burial service will be 3:00 p.m. to be held at Hawaiian Memorial Park Cemetery.
