Margaret Chong Young's Obituary
Margaret Chong Young, a resident of Honolulu, passed peacefully at home on Sunday, January 4, 2015. Preceded in passing by her husband, Alfred Y. K. Young in 1993. Margaret was ninety years “young” and enjoyed a wonderfully full life as a teacher at Pauoa Elementary School from where she retired, in 1992, from a nearly fifty-year teaching career.
Margaret was an active member of the United Church of Christ–Judd Street and belonged to Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Beta Beta State Hawai‘i Chapter, Kappa Kappa Iota Sorority, and the Associated Chinese University Women. She authored three books “Hawai‘i’s People From China” (1974), “And They Also Came” (1976), and “An Historical Account of the St. Peter’s Church (Episcopal)” (1977).
Margaret is survived by sons, Robert and Richard Young; daughter, Linda Bessara; granddaughters, Julie, Kristen and Laura Young, and Logan Bessara; siblings, Robert Chong, Elaine Wong, and Lemuel Chong.
A celebration of Margaret’s life will be held Saturday, January 17, at the United Church of Christ, 467 N. Judd Street. Visitation to begin at 9:00 a.m.; Services to begin at 11:00 a.m. Casual attire. Private burial.
