Mary Kathryn Broms' Obituary
Mary Asam Broms passed away on February 15, 2024, at the age of 82. She leaves behind love and laughter that touched the lives of all who knew her. Her loving husband, Philip Russell Broms, predeceased her by only 5 months.
Born in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, to Alma and John Austin, Mary was a woman of remarkable strength, fearlessness, and resilience. After growing up in Ashland, Oregon with her 4 brothers (Alex, John, Phil and Mike), Mary travelled to Hawaii at the age of 19 with her Aunt Isabel. After arriving, Mary never looked back. She enrolled at the University of Hawaii to obtain her teaching degree. Mary was a proud UH graduate.
While raising her children, Mary kept herself busy running Jennie’s Garden in Kahala Mall. She grew the shop into a successful flower, lei and plant business while developing lifelong friends and wonderful memories.
Throughout her life, Mary was a vibrant presence in the lives of her many friends, with whom she shared unforgettable memories. Whether it was traveling on their girls’ trips or simply enjoying each other's company over a black and white mocha, Mary cherished every moment spent with her dear friends. A box of See’s Candy, chocolate-covered gummy bears, and her golden retrievers brought her additional joy.
Mary adored her grandchildren. They laughed a lot, and Mary was always ready to bake chocolate chip cookies with them. They were able to spend quality time with her while she and Phil were living in Washington and even more when Phil and Mary returned to Hawai`i in 2010.
Mary was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed. Her warmth, laughter, and love will live on in the hearts of her children, grandchildren, family, and friends.
