Matthew Soon Kwan Pyun Jr.'s Obituary
Matthew S.K. Pyun Jr. passed peacefully at home on January 2, 2021. He was born in Honolulu on March 21, 1937 to Elsie and Matthew S.K. Pyun Sr. He is an alumnus of Roosevelt High School, the University of Hawaii, and the Drake University Law School in Des Moines, Iowa.
He began his law career as a law clerk for Federal Judge Martin Pence. Matthew had a long career in private practice, with a specialty in criminal law, and worked in government law as well, for the Offices of Corporation Counsel in both Honolulu and Kauai. In 2007 he was appointed to the position of Kauai County Attorney and most recently served as division head for the Litigation Division for the Office of the Corporation Counsel for the City and County of Honolulu. Matthew served as a Per Diem Judge for the District Court of the First Circuit (Honolulu), and District Court Judge of the Third Circuit (Hawaii Island). In his younger days, he loved to play hand ball and racquetball.
He is survived by wife Patricia; children: Leslie Chow (Sterling), Anne Sanders (Scot); grandchildren: Casey Chow, Sara Anne, and Claire Sanders; sister Judith Kim (Vernon); niece and nephews; and cousins. A private service will be held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 45 Judd Street, on January 23, 2021 at 10:00 am. No flowers please.
