Dear family and fellow friends of Orlino:
It is with sadness that I read the obituary.
Orlino, myself and many other fellow Superintendents at Pearl worked together through some difficult times, and yet, always found the time to share with each other the happiness of family and hobbies. I recall giving Orlino a piece of 'sandle wood' which I had dragged down the mountains in Waianae. He looked at it and said "I will carve something of beauty from this, something that will live on forever".
His wife Mila was, as he was, a beautiful and caring person. We would frequently share the same table at Superintendent functions where we shared stories of family life, our beginnings in the plantation towns (I from Waipahu and my wife from Ewa) and our years of working together at the Shipyard where we frequently were under extreme pressure to get our work accomplished on time and on budget. Orlino could always be counted on to lend a helping hand to his fellow Superintendents who required assistance. We worked hard together; Orlino was like our pastor, he listened well and provided sound advice.
He retired in 1985 and I in 1991. The years went on and we lost contact with each other. I went on to work for Matson where I retired from in '06 and currently do consulting work here in Hawaii and abroad (I write this email from Saipan).
In conclusion, please accept my Heart Felt Condolances.
Sincerely,
Gary Moniz
