Phyllis Frances Lonokapu's Obituary
We celebrate the life and legacy of Phyllis Francis Lonokapu, whose journey was marked by dedication, creativity, and deep connections to her community and family.
Phyllis valued education and was an entrepreneur.
● A proud graduate of Kamehameha Schools, Class of 1955, Phyllis began her college studies at UH Hilo, where she met her beloved husband, George “Doi” Lonokapu. She went on to earn both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in education from UH Manoa, persevering through ten years of night school while working at Ramsey’s selling appliances.
● Her teaching career spanned over 35 years at Waimanalo Elementary, where she touched countless lives. Even after semi-retiring in 2001, she continued to substitute for teachers until fully retiring in 2004.
● Phyllis also ran a catering business, Kekea Enterprises, sharing her love of food and cooking. Even after she stopped the business, she was known for her amazing cooking such as her famous ake recipe.
Phyllis enjoyed being active and involved. Some of her activities include the following:
● She was a member of the Kamehameha Alumni Concert Glee Club.
● Selected and participated in NASA Space Camp, and upon her return, taught students about science and exploration encouraging their interest in these subjects.
● Phyllis enjoyed golfing, and while she wasn’t part of a formal club, her family’s connection to the Hawaiian Telephone Company Golf group was a source of fond memories.
● An active member of the the Alu Like Kupuna Program at Papakolea and Waimanalo.
Phyllis was a gifted craftsperson, skilled in lauhala weaving, feather lei making, ukulele making, sewing, haku lei making, and Hawaiian quilt making. She enjoyed creating things with her hands, and her artistry enriched the lives of those around her and preserved cherished Hawaiian traditions.
Throughout her life, Phyllis Lonokapu embraced many roles, including educator, entrepreneur, club member and artist. Above all, she was a devoted mother and grandmother, always prioritizing her family’s well-being. Her dedication to service, creativity and caring for others helped her build lasting connections and leave a meaningful legacy of aloha.
