Restituto Ramos Paguirigan's Obituary
Restituto “Dingo” Ramos Paguirigan of San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte, Barrio 9, died peacefully at his home in Kalihi on July 29, having lived fully to the age of 89. He was born on May 16, 1923, the only son of Arcadio Paguirigan and Simforosa Ramos Paguirigan. He had two older sisters, Ruperta Paguirigan Coloma and Vicenta Paguirigan, and a younger sister Macaria Paguirigan Domingo, all of whom pre-deceased him. In 1946, Dingo was among the laborers brought on the S.S. Maunawili from the Philippine port of Vigan, to the port of Hilo, Hawaii, to work alongside other immigrants in Hawaii’s sugar cane fields. Subsequently, he secured a job as a stevedore for Castle & Cooke where he worked for 36 years until he retired at age 62 in July, 1985. A proud union man, he took part in the historic 1949 strike of longshoremen and was instrumental in recruiting and organizing Filipino workers.Dingo’s relentless labor and unselfish dedication to family were matched by that of his wife, Linda Saoit Paguirigan. Together they made it possible for dozens of extended family members to immigrate to Hawaii and improve their own lives and their immediate families. They enabled the college educations and achievements of each of their five children, Cristeta, Marilyn, Rosemarie, Restituto Jr., and Joseph. They have paved the way for limitless opportunities for their 5 grandchildren, Justin (18), Joshua (14), Jasmine (10), Leilani (5), and Nicholas (6 months) and a 6th grandchild, Cruz, who in October 2012 will be the newest member of the Paguirigan Family. Memorial services for Dingo will be held at Hawaiian Memorial Park in Kaneohe on August 23rd with visitation at 5:30pm and on August 24th at 9:00 am with burial services to follow at 11:00am at the Valley of the Temples. Following Filipino tradition, evening prayers will be held from August 22 to August 31 at the family home in Kalihi at 6:30pm.For inquiries, please call Restituto Jr at 864-1839 or Marilyn at 497-7506.
