Rex Reed Berglund's Obituary
Celebrating the Life of Commander Rex Reed Berglund, USN Retired, who passed away February 19, 2015 in Kaneohe, Hawaii. Rex was born in Kansas City, Missouri on July 28, 1926. He was an Eagle Scout and involved in the Mit-O-Say tribe. After finishing high school at Central High in Kansas City, he entered the V-5 program and became a Navy Pilot. He was a member of the Red Ripper squadron (VF-11) and was shot down during the Korean War. Rex graduated from Tulane University with a degree in Economics. Rex ended his military career while serving on the USS Forrestal, after encountering multiple sclerosis. Despite his disability, he and his wife, Amy, were able to travel to Southeast Asia, Europe, and mainland United States. They also enjoyed and attended operas. Rex was active in the Elks Club and served twice as Exalted Ruler of the Kailua Elks Lodge from 1981-1982 and 1991-1992. He also worked for H&R Block.
Rex was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Matilda Berglund and his son, Michael.
He is survived by his wife, Amy; his children, John Berglund, Christine Mercieca (who joined him in death on March 4, 2015 and is no longer with us), Eric Berglund, and their mother, Marie Vallely; his sister, Thelma Williams; grandchildren, John and Michael Berglund; great-grandchildren, Michael and McKenna Berglund; and many nieces and nephews.
His Committal Service will be held 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at the Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery in Kaneohe, Hawaii.
