R. D. Trimillos
Aloha to the Lum family at this difficult time. Dick was the inspiration and driving engine for many of the intermediate and high school band programs throughout the state. He was also known and respected throughout the national band network in the US, and he hosted many visiting bands and band directors at UHM. As Music Department Chair, I appreciated his student-focussed energy as well his national reputation which reflected well on our Department. Outside the UH, he was a loyal supporter for the Friends of the Royal Hawaiian Band and often attended the annual FRHB meeting/concert at the Queen Emma Summer Palace. He was a good colleague, a dynamo band director, and (along with Floyd Uchima) an architect of band programs as educational experience in Hawai'i. Me ke aloha poina 'ole, Dick.
