Rose Nunes Smith's Obituary
Rose Nunes “Girlie” Smith passed away on ¬April 6th, 2016 in Kaneohe, Oahu at the age of 96 years young. Rose known to many as “Grandma Rose” or “Auntie Girlie” was on born on July 14th, 1919 in Lahaina, Maui to Frank N and Nancy S U Correia. Rose graduated from McKinley High School class of 1937. Rose and her husband the late Captain Allen A Smith of the Honolulu Fire Department were long-time residents of Ka’aawa, Oahu.
Girlie well known for her love for baking, sewing and devotion to the church. She spent many years as an active member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church and the Harmony Chapter 4 OES. Grandma Rose gave many years as a childcare provider nurturing many children and families on Oahu with her abiding love, kindness and caring spirit. Retiring from the Rainbow School located at the Prince Kuhio Federal Building at the age of 90 in 2009. Her beautiful smile, humor, giving and loving spirit will be missed by many.
Rose is survived by her sons Harold A Smith II of Palm Coast, FL and Noel A Smith of Honolulu, HI her sister Alma Galbraith of Fairfax, VA, brothers Frank Correia and Rudy Correia both of Kaneohe, Oahu. Grandchildren Kelly Machado of Maui HI, Keahi Burke of Hilo HI, Fetu Kiliona Kalawaianui of Palm Coast FL, Allen A Smith II of Kahuku HI, Elise “Noelani” Carrasco of Marina CA and Masina McCollum of Kwajalein Marshall Islands; 15 great grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren; also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and dear long-time friend and ohana till the end, Francis Padeken.
Rose was preceded in death by her husband Cpt. Allen “Boy” A Smith (HFD), her sons’ Ronald A Smith, David A Smith, daughter Lunan U Kauanaulu, grandchild Kalei Burke and siblings Sonny Correia and Nora Enos.
Services celebrating her life will be held at Hawaiian Memorial Mortuary on Wednesday, May 4th, 2016 10:30 am, Interment will follow at Hawaiian Memorial Cemetery at 2:00 pm.
