Next time when students ask if Confucius' way of becoming humane and cultivating harmony is practicable, my heart and head will remember the life of Ruth Lenney Kleinfeld. Her early path was narrow and largely unprecedented. Later, her accomplishments weren't recognized as they should have been. Still, she loved learning and did her utmost. She cultivated others. She meant what she said. She was grounded. She was a stickler about prosaic rituals. And she broadened the way for others, especially those who had been excluded. I grieve Ruth's death. I will also remember her as a woman who still has lessons to teach.
