Samuel Cummins Luke's Obituary
Samuel Cummins Luke, 82 beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, born in Honolulu on March 11, 1935, peacefully passed away on May 23, 2017. Sam passed at Castle Memorial Hospital in Kailua with his wife and family members by his side.
Sam was a proud St. Louis School alumnus and attended St. Louis School from 1st grade till graduation. He received his BA from the University of Hawaii with a major in Public Administrations. After college, he became a manager at Pacific Insurance Co. Ltd, then a Vice President of Hawaii Resort Industry, followed by the operational controller for Island Insurance Co. Ltd. After that he became a Vice President for Professional Underwriters Corp and left to open 4 Star Insurance Agency and Later VIP Underwriters Corp and finally became semi-retired and as independent insurance general agent.
Sam’s activities included- President of the American Jujitsu Institute (in 2001 promoted to Judan, 10th degree black belt in Jujitsu), Kodenkan alliance, the Lin Yee Chung Association, Living Life Source Foundation, Christians in Real Estate, Association of Information Technology Professionals, St. Louis Alumni Class of 53, Kung Sheong Doo Association, Tsien Sin Association and Hui Kai Makani club. He was also a Lay Minister at St. John Vianney Catholic Church and took communion to the homebound. Sam was honored by the Honolulu Mayor and United Chinese Society of Hawaii as the Model Father for 2011.
Sam enjoyed traveling, his plants, good food, cigars, any type of liquor (even not so good stuff) and hanging out in the garage with friends and family. He also enjoyed giving out trinkets, candy, fruit and flowers. He especially liked a good deal and could spend hours at the dollar store. Through Jujitsu, Sam learned healing massage and constantly worked to improve his healing abilities and as many of you know, generously massaged those in need.
Sam was a loving, kind, generous man, always willing to lend a help hand to others. Sam and Florence traveled to many U.S. cities for conferences and for pleasure. They also traveled to China and went on a Mediterranean cruise. In June, the entire family ventured on an Alaskan cruise, it was their best trip.
Sam is survived by wife Florence, sons Lance (Darlene), Layne (Tessie), Larsen and daughter Lisa (Eddie) Anderson. He also has eight grandchildren, Christian Kai, Sam, Brandon, Solomon, Brittni, Spencer, Natalia Anderson and Masen; and one greatgrandchild, Alia. He is also survived by brother Vernon and sister Lynda (Ed) Lee. He is predeceased by his son, Lorin and brother Kingsley.
Services are scheduled for Saturday June 17, 2017, at St. John Vianney Church in Kailua. Visitation from 9:00 and services at 10:30. Private burial services will be held at a later date.
