I was 19 in 1973 when I reported to U.S. Coast Guard Upolu Pt on the Big Island. I was initaily greeted by this big seemingly gruff Hawaiian who turned out to be very generous and open with his time and knowledge. I became Dukes dive partner and he taught me about the Ocean he grew up in. He knew everyone and it opened many doors for me. I played with him in the local recreation department sports leagues in Hawi. We made a good doubles Tennis Team and no one could beat us. Duke was quick and a good athelete for a 50 yr 280 pound bigman. I learned from Duke what it meant to be Hawaiian, the strength of family and how much he was willing to do for anyone he considered family. I was lucky to have known him and the influence he had on me.
