My wife Karen and I were so saddened when we read the obituaries in today's Star-Advertiser (7/18/13) and learned that Stan Togo had passed away.
I first met Stan in the spring of 2010 when I was recovering from back surgery. My wife had arranged for him to drive me to and from my medical appointments at the Rehabilitation Hospital. He was always on time, even though the street in front of our home was undergoing repairs and the traffic was often halted for several minutes at a time.
Almost from the first time I met him I considered Stan a friend. During the drives we would talk about the many interests we shared. One of them was watching reruns of the original Hawaii Five-O TV shows because they showed Honolulu they way it used to look and featured a lot of local people who are no longer with us. I also remember that he had ordered a new taxi and was excited about getting it outfitted and on the road.
My therapy sessions were several times a week for a period of two months. My wife had prepared a gift for him when he brought me home from my last appointment. I was so surprised because he had a gift for us. Later, when Karen and I would visit the mainland we would arrange for Stan to meet us at the airport when we arrived home. He was away there waiting for us.
I had not seen him in quite a while, but it was comforting to know that if I needed him, he would be there. That, to me, is the true definition of friendship. Karen and I extend to Stan's family our deep condolences. He was a good and gentle man.
