Violet Kiope Beazley Mossman
(February 26, 1918 to October 10, 2014)
Violet Kiope Beazley Mossman (96), daughter of George Arthur Beazley and Louisa Paweo Kukahoe, passed away at home with her family on October 10, 2014. Violet was born in one of the houses at the Makapuu Lighthouse on Oahu, where her father worked as the lighthouse keeper. She attended St. Marks, Waikiki School, and graduated in 1936 from
St. Andrew’s Priory.
Her nursing education started in Hawaii at St. Francis School of Nursing, and eventually her studies took her by boat and train to St. Louis, Missouri where she interned. She graduated from St. Francis in 1939. She returned home to begin her career as a wife (married William Stone Mossman), mother, nurse, and member of St. Marks Episcopal Church.
She worked at Hale Mohalu, where Hansens Disease (leprosy) patients were treated, and later was head of surgical nursing at St. Francis Hospital. In 1958, she started working at Oahu State Prison and was known as a caring, assertive, and courageous nurse who headed up the prison infirmary. She retired in 1983, completing 25 years of service.
She received many awards throughout her years, but was especially proud of her volunteer work with Project Dana (in-home assistance and care) and with St. Marks Episcopal Church. She has been an active member of the Queen Emma Hawaiian Civic Club and The Kaahumanu Society.
She is survived by son William Mossman (Emmaline), daughter Nanette Judd (Wayne), Michael Mossman (Edwina), Violet P. Mossman, eight grandchildren, Scott Mossman-deceased (Rise), Michael Judd (Stacy), Kimberly Mok (Chi), Boyd Judd (MaryAnn), Lena Mossman, Guy-Michael Mossman, Maunakea Mossman (Mariah), Kauanoe Mossman, and seventeen great-grandchildren, Blaine, Michelle, and Lynden Judd, Taylor, Ashley, and Caleb Mossman, Emma Lindsey, Lindsey and Kaylee Mok, Abigail and Riley Mossman, Eva and Louisa Mossman, Malia and Maile Judd, and Violet and Elai Mossman.
Services will be held at St. Marks Episcopal Church, 539 Kapahulu Avenue on date. Visitation at 9:30 A.M. followed by High Mass at 11:00 A.M. with lunch to follow. Aloha attire.
