Virginia L. DeCastro's Obituary
Virginia Lakowski DeCastro, 84 of Kailua, passed away on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at Pohai Nani. She was born in Chicago, Illinois on January 24, 1934. She was born to her father Joseph S. Lakowski and mother Sophie Ann Bednarcyk. She was the youngest of 3 children. Virginia was well educated, as she had earned herself a Masters degree. After graduation she began her career as a teacher for the Department of Education. She taught at schools such as Hauula elementary and also Mokapu elementary. On July 27, 1968 she married her loving husband John DeCastro at St. George church. She was a very giving person, after she retired, she volunteered at St. Anthony's Thrift shop, Kailua library book store and also the YMCA. Virginia was also a member on St. Anthony's Church in Kailua, AAUW (American Association University of Women), Delta Kappa Gamma- Episilon Chapter. She lived in numerous places from Chicago, to Hawaii, residing in Hauula, Waimanalo, and finally making Kailua her hometown. Some of the people who have had an influence on her life were Peggy & Don McGinnis and her family. In her spare time she enjoyed activities such as feeding birds, crosswords, collecting bears & books, photography and volunteering. She loved music, she listened to Christmas carols and Hymns. The most important events in Virginia's life were moving to Hawaii, marrying her husband John and her trips back home to Chicago.
She was a very giving, caring woman, with a strong personality and very much loved a good joke. Virginia is survived by her nephew: Mervin A. Medeiros, and her Chicago family whom was also very important to her nephew: David (Kathy) Lakowski, nieces: Judy (Lou) Lakowski Ordonez, Nancy (Ian) Lakowski, Linda (Steve) Lakowski Goldsher and Karen (Tom) Lakowski Gianni.
Funeral services for Virginia L. DeCastro will be held on Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at Hawaiian Memorial Park Mortuary (45-425 Kamehameha Hwy. Kaneohe, Hawaii 96744). Visitation: Will begin at 9:30 am. Services: 10:30 am. Burial: 1:00 pm at Hawaiian Memorial Park Cemetery.
