One of the wonderful things about my mother’s family was she had a lot of sisters! Everyone knew the Jones girls in the little country town of Waimanalo. Not only were there eight of them, they were all very pretty. My Aunt Winona was one of those pretty country girls.
If you could imagine a small country farm nestled in the foothills of the beautiful Ko’olau mountains. This is where these sweet, funny, rambunctious clan of Joneses lived. They were sisters that looked out for each other & cared deeply for one another.
When my parents divorced my Mom struggled to care for us, so I got to live with Auntie Winona, Uncle Arthur and my cousin Michelle for a year when I was eleven. That’s what sisters do and Auntie Winona was the best.
Uncle Arthur was pretty awesome too.
Auntie liked to sew and she saw that I was very interested in sewing. I guess I must’ve watched her & asked tons of questions. She asked me, “do want to sew a dress?” I couldn’t believe it, YES!! She smiled and said okay let’s go pick out a dress pattern and you can pick out the material you want. I’ll never forget that dress. It was white with tiny purple roses with green petals. It was sleeveless with an empire waistline. Auntie showed me how to pin the pattern to the material, cut it out, then sew it. At eleven this was so, so special to me that she took the time & care to help me learn something I grew up loving to do.
She and Uncle Arthur were always so happy to see me whenever I got to visit them on Oahu. As I wipe away my tears it is with sincere lost and sadness I say goodbye to her. She was a very special person and she will always be in my heart.
Love,
Davidean
