Ivan Gene "Johnny" Ah Sam's Obituary
Ivan Gene “Johnny” Ah Sam, 68, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2020. He was at home surrounded by his wife, Jacqueline Ann Ah Sam; four daughters, Sheri-Anne N. (Kanani) Elarco, Natalie H. Ah Sam, Icelynn K.N. (Glenn) Rubio, and Crystal U. (Bryson) Felisi; and five grandchildren.
He was born in Kohala, Hawaii Island to the late Joseph and Madeline Ah Sam, and graduated from Kohala High School, Class of 1970. Ivan served in the United States Army Reserve units of Company A and Company C, of the 100th Battalion 442nd Infantry. He enlisted in 1971 and retired after 23 years of service in 1994 as a First Sergeant. He worked as a Marine Machinery Mechanic at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and retired July 2020 after 40 years of service.
Friends and family describe him as kind-hearted, full of ALOHA, loved his family, and a wonderful friend. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, fishing, and singing karaoke. Ivan was often seen on the field; coaching youth sports and umpiring various sports leagues. He will be missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by brothers Glenn, Al Duane, and Ray Dean; sisters Charlene Caravalho and Josette Cruz; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Preceded in death by brothers Joseph and Alexander; sisters Geraldine Ayoso and Madeline Hayno.
